MRI SCANS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. WHAT IS AN MRI?

MRI is a scanner which uses strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients and radio waves to generate images of our body. These cross sectional scanners enable us to see the internal organs from various angles and provide more information as compared to CT scans or X Rays. An MRI scan helps your doctor to make a faster and more accurate diagnosis.

2. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN OPEN MRI AND A CLOSED BORE MRI?

Open MRI scanners usually have a permanent C shaped magnet with magnetic field strengths of 0.2 - 0.3 Tesla. Closed MRIs usually have higher strengths, like 1.5 T that we have in our centre. Closed bore systems provide much better image quality as compared to open systems and take half the time for each scan.

Due to the weak magnet strength, open bore scanners are unable to perform advanced studies like body diffusion or non-contrast perfusion.

3. HOW MUCH TIME DOES AN MRI SCAN TAKE?

A typical MRI exam may take 15 - 45 minutes, depending on the type of examination required.

4. DOES MRI PRODUCE HARMFUL RADIATION?

No. MRI produces no harmful ionising radiations like a CT scan or X-Ray. There are no documented side effects for an MRI scan.

5. WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM SCARED?

Claustrophobia (Fear of closed spaces) is a common condition, which can create panic when an individual is in a closed space like a lift, a small room or an MRI scanner. We do take this condition seriously and do whatever possible to keep you comfortable.

Our machines have a wide opening and has calming lights to reduce the anxiety. Our scanner has very low noise and is capable of completing scans much faster than a normal MRI scanner.

In addition to this, our experienced radiographers are specially trained to keep the patients relaxed, with comfortable positioning and audio communication throughout the scan. You also have an option to listen to relaxing music through headphones and if necessary, a family member or your friend can accompany you during the scan for support.

6. DO YOU HAVE SILENT MRI IN YOUR CENTRE?

Yes we do. Conventional MRI scanners generate sounds up to 120 dB. In our scanner with advanced ComforTone solution, we can offer 80% reduction in noise in most sequences. This reduces your anxiety. We also provide headphones for communication or music playback to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the scan.

7. IS MRI SAFE FOR ALL PEOPLE?

MRI is safe for most people. However, since MRI uses strong magnetic fields, there are certain times when an MRI is not advisable.

  1. If you have a metallic implant in your body, like plates used in fractures, cardiac pacemakers etc. Most recent implants are MRI safe, which needs to be confirmed by our radiographer.

  2. If you are pregnant. As the long term effects of strong magnetic fields are unknown in a developing fetus, we don't usually recommend MRI scans at this stage. MRI scans are safe in the later stages of pregnancy.

8. WHAT IS AN MRI CONTRAST AGENT?

Contrast agents are medicines used in various scans to highlight the abnormalities in our body. In MRI, a compound called Gadolinium is used. Gadolinium is usually safe and tolerated well by most patients, but some may have a reaction to it. It is recommended to drink plenty of water after the scan.

At Soorya Diagnostics, we don't compromise on safety. We use the best available brand and chemical formulation to ensure you are safe and comfortable.
