ANOMALY SCANS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
 

1. WHAT IS AN ANOMALY SCAN?

 

     It is a scan done in your mid-pregnancy where the doctor takes a close look at your baby and uterus to confirm that your baby is developing normally. During the scan various structural or physical problems or defects that may occur in babies can be found out . It can take up to 30 minutes.

 

2. IS ANOMALY SCAN A MUST FOR ME?

 

     Yes. Anomaly scan is an important scan to detect structural abnormalities in your baby and it helps your gynaecologist to reassure you and your family. In the unfortunate event of detection of a problem, early course to the treatment of such a problem and further follow-up can be planned in the best interest of your unborn baby and your family.

 

3. WHEN SHOULD I GET AN ANOMALY SCAN DONE?

 

     Anomaly scan is done around 20 weeks. You can get it done any time between 18 and 22 weeks.

 

4. ARE ANOMALY SCANS GUARANTEED TO PICK UP HUNDRED PERCENT OF THE ANOMALIES?

 

     Unfortunately we cannot detect hundred percent of fetal anomalies. Anomalies which are too small to detect or which develops later in fetal growth may be missed.

 

5. WHAT ARE THE ANOMALIES WHICH CAN BE PICKED UP IN AN ANOMALY SCAN?

 

     All major anomalies can be picked up in the anomaly scan, especially that of the fetal brain, heart, face, spine, abdominal wall, arms and legs. Some anomalies of the bowels develops late and may be found out only later on in pregnancy. Anomaly scan can also detect some chromosomal anomalies.

 

6. WILL I BE ABLE TO KNOW ABOUT MY BABY'S HEARING, EYESIGHT OR INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT BY THE ANOMALY SCAN?

 

     Unfortunately, no. Anomaly scan cannot evaluate any of the above things mentioned.

 

7. IS 3D/4D SCAN SAFE FOR MY BABY? IS IT PAINFUL?

 

     3D/4D or anomaly scan is safe for your baby. No, it is not painful. In fact it is an exciting experience to watch your baby along with your partner or family.
